Frequently Asked Questions
Spray Foam Insulation Questions
How much should I expect to pay for spray foam insulation?
HomeGuide lists $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed: open cell $1.50 to $3.50, closed cell $3.00 to $5.00. Many jobs have a $1,000 to $2,000 minimum. We measure and give you a written price.
What is cheaper, spray foam or regular insulation?
Blown-in and batts cost less per square foot; HomeGuide lists blown-in at $1.00 to $2.80. Foam costs more but seals air and handles moisture, so it earns its price in crawl spaces, rim joists and under roof decks.
Why do some people call spray foam a red flag?
Usually because of bad installs: foam sprayed too thick at once, off-ratio mixes that leave an odor, or foam on a roof deck hiding a leak. Proper product choice, ventilation and a written record of what was installed avoid most of it.
Why are people removing spray foam insulation?
Most removals are foam in the wrong place, such as on a roof deck that now needs inspection, or a bad mix. We look first and price removal in writing if it is needed.
Should I seal my crawl space vents in Tennessee?
In many humid-climate homes, closing vents, laying a heavy vapor barrier and insulating the walls keeps summer moisture out. It needs a plan for drying the space, which we explain during the visit.
Are there rebates for insulation through Dickson Electric?
Dickson Electric System partners with TVA on EnergyRight programs. TVA EnergyRight offers rebates for air sealing and home insulation installed by a Quality Contractor Network member, who files the claim. Check the QCN directory before you count on one.
Spray Foam Insulation Questions
Should I spray foam my roof deck?
If your HVAC unit and ducts are in the attic, foaming the roof deck can cut cooling losses a lot. It also makes the deck harder to inspect, so we recommend it only where it makes sense.
How long do I stay out after spraying?
HomeGuide advises at least 24 hours for the sprayed area. We ventilate during and after spraying and explain the plan for your house.
Is there a downside to spray foam?
It costs more per square foot, needs cure time and is hard to remove if put in the wrong place. Careful placement avoids most issues.
Will foam stop a roof leak?
No. Leaks need repair first. Foam over a leak hides the damage.
Crawl Space Encapsulation & Insulation Questions
How much does crawl space encapsulation cost?
HomeGuide lists $3 to $10 per square foot, $3,000 to $15,000 for most homes. A vapor barrier alone runs $1,200 to $4,000. We measure and price in writing.
Why are my crawl space batts falling down?
Usually moisture. Humid air condenses in them, they get heavy and fall. Encapsulation and wall insulation fix the cause.
Will encapsulation lower my power bill?
It usually helps, especially when ducts run through the crawl space, because the air around them is no longer hot and humid.
Do I need a dehumidifier?
Many sealed crawl spaces need one or a small supply of conditioned air. We explain the options.
Attic Insulation & Air Sealing Questions
How much does attic insulation cost?
HomeGuide lists a typical job at $1,000 to $2,700, about $1,800 on average, and air sealing at $350 to $3,000.
What R-value should my Dickson attic have?
Tennessee's code summary lists R-38 for ceilings in Zone 4. That is a sensible target.
Is foaming the roof deck worth it?
When the HVAC system and ducts are in the attic, it often is. Otherwise, sealing and blown-in is usually the better value.
Do I need to remove old insulation?
Only if it is wet, soiled, moldy or in the way of sealing.
Metal Building & Barn Insulation Questions
Who sprays foam insulation for sheds near Dickson?
We do. Closed-cell foam on sheds, shops and metal buildings is a regular part of our work around Dickson County.
Will foam stop my metal building from sweating?
Yes. Closed-cell foam on the steel keeps humid air off the cold metal.
How much does it cost to foam a metal building?
HomeGuide lists closed cell at $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot installed. We measure walls and roof and price in writing.
Do I need a permit?
It depends on the county and how the building is used. Check with your local building office.
Blown-In Insulation Questions
How much does blown-in insulation cost?
HomeGuide lists $1.00 to $2.80 per square foot and $900 to $3,600 for an attic. Fixr lists $1,750 to $5,500 for about 1,500 square feet.
Cellulose or fiberglass for my attic?
Both work. Cellulose slows air slightly better; fiberglass does not absorb moisture. We explain the trade-offs.
Will blown-in settle?
Loose fill settles slightly, so we blow to the settled depth for your target R-value.
Can you add blown-in over old insulation?
Yes, if it is dry and clean, after sealing.
Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions
How much does insulation removal cost?
HomeAdvisor lists $1 to $2 per square foot, with typical jobs around $600 to $1,200; removal plus replacement averages about $1,852.
Should I put new batts back in my crawl space?
Usually not. In humid Middle Tennessee, encapsulating and foaming the walls lasts longer than batts between the joists.
Do you remove insulation after raccoons or rats?
Yes. Soiled insulation comes out so the space can be sealed and refilled.
Can spray foam be removed?
Yes, by cutting and scraping. It costs more than removing loose fill.
